Berkeley Finance Conference:

The 3rd annual Berkeley Finance Conference took place on November 13, 2009 at the Haas School of Business.  The theme was: “Recovery – What will it be like?”

The private equity panel featured:

  • Lisa Edgar: Managing Director, Paul Capital
  • Thomas Ley: Managing Director, Guggenheim Partners
  • Pat Crocker: Managing Director, Harris Williams
  • Mark Briggs: Partner and Co-Founder, GESD Capital Partners
  • Moderator – Steve Etter: Partner, Greyrock Capital

The only conference of its kind on the west coast, the conference was a phenomenal success, bringing together practitioners, students, and academia to discuss ideas and trends. This year, we continued to build upon the two previous years’ strengths and accomplishments to explore current financial topics and challenges pertinent to the economic backdrop.

BPEN Social Hour:

On March 10th, the BPEN hosted another successful social hour at Gordon Biersch in San Francisco. Thank you to all those who attended. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow Cal alumni working in private equity in the Bay Area. A special thank you to Steve Etter and Mark French of Greyrock Capital (and both UC Berkeley alumni) for sponsoring the event.  We will be planning another get together soon, so check in again to learn details.

ACG San Francisco:

On Thursday, February 5th, BPEN Co-Chair Tom Beerle managed the Haas student volunteer effort at the Annual Mergers & Acquisitions Conference and Capital Connection.  UC Berkeley was also well represented by introductory speaker Richard Lyons, Dean of the Haas School, and expert speakers Holly Schroth and Suneel Udpa, both Haas professors who spoke on the topics of strategic business negotiations and effective accounting analysis, respectively.  The Capital Connection provided a great opportunity for networking and potential dealmaking.

The BPEN student director will continue to coordinate the student volunteer effort in the coming years, supporting a successful conference and ensuring that Cal remains the premier brand on the West Coast in private equity.
